Jason Collins, the first openly gay player in NBA history, has died at the age of 47. His family confirmed that he passed away after a battle with brain cancer.
Reports later showed that his death was linked to respiratory failure. Other serious conditions also played a role, including pulmonary embolism, hydrocephalus, and glioblastoma.
He was said to have died peacefully at his home in Los Angeles. His remains were cremated on May 15.

Jason Collins was drafted into the NBA in 2001 alongside his twin brother Jarron Collins. He played 13 seasons in the league.
His career included time with the New Jersey Nets, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, and Washington Wizards. He later returned to the Nets in 2014 after the team moved to Brooklyn.
In 2013, Collins came out as gay while still an active player. This made him the first openly gay athlete in any of the top four major sports leagues in North America. He received strong public support from figures like Kobe Bryant and David Stern.

Collins’ health challenges became public in September 2025 when his family announced his brain cancer diagnosis. Later, he revealed that doctors had diagnosed him with stage 4 glioblastoma.
Medical experts describe glioblastoma as a very aggressive brain cancer. It can become life threatening quickly without treatment.
He later traveled to Singapore for experimental treatment options not available in the United States. His condition briefly improved before the cancer returned.

Following his passing, Collins’ family released a statement reflecting on his life and influence. They thanked supporters for their prayers and care during his illness.
They said, “Jason changed lives in unexpected ways and was an inspiration to all who knew him and to those who admired him from afar.”
