Carletta Davis Takes Office as Prichard’s First Black Woman Mayor, Pledging to Rebuild and Revitalize the City

Carletta Davis Sworn in as Prichard’s New Mayor
Applause filled the Cooper Municipal Complex on Monday as Carletta Davis was officially sworn in as the new mayor of Prichard, Alabama. Her inauguration marked a powerful moment in the city’s history as she became Prichard’s first Black woman to serve as mayor. Davis succeeds Jimmie Gardner, who had led the city since 2016.

“I am very excited. I am honored and humbled,” Davis said after taking her oath. “I’m looking forward to the future.” Her words reflected the energy and hope that filled the room as residents and city officials celebrated a new chapter for Prichard.

A Vision to Move Prichard Forward
Mayor Davis enters office with a clear goal—to rebuild trust, restore pride, and move the city forward. She emphasized teamwork with the new city council, saying, “We all have a common goal, which is to move the city forward and to create a change in the city.”

Davis’s leadership team includes several newly elected council members: Traci Hale in District 3, Teresa Fox Bettis in District 4, and Roy Smith III in District 5. Together, they plan to tackle key community concerns such as improving infrastructure, addressing blight, and ensuring better public safety for residents.

Council Members Prioritize Safety and Revitalization
City council members shared the mayor’s determination to restore Prichard’s neighborhoods and strengthen its economy. “We’re trying to take care of the blight. We’re trying to take care of the infrastructure. We’re trying to take care of the safety needs,” said Councilman Roy Smith III.

Councilwoman Teresa Fox Bettis added that residents are eager to see cleaner streets and more local business growth. “The trash and blight are really big concerns for citizens,” she said. “People want to see business come back to Prichard. Those are the things we’re going to be working on.”

A Historic Moment for Representation and Renewal
Carletta Davis’s election marks a milestone not only for the city but also for representation in Alabama politics. As Prichard’s first Black woman mayor, she brings a fresh perspective to a city that has faced economic and social challenges for years. Her leadership symbolizes both progress and resilience in a community ready for renewal.

Residents and local leaders expressed optimism that this administration will focus on restoring opportunity and civic pride. “We all want the same thing,” Davis said. “We want a better future for Prichard, and we’re ready to get to work.”
