Megan Piphus Elevates Young Voices Through Music as Sesame Street’s First Black Female Puppeteer Launches Exhibit in Nashville

New museum exhibit honors Megan Piphus and her impact

Megan Piphus, the first Black woman puppeteer on Sesame Street, is now part of a special display at the National Museum of African American Music in Nashville. A puppet character she brought to life now sits inside a glass case, marking her legacy in the world of puppetry and children’s media.

“It’s a full-circle moment,” Piphus said. “I’ve toured this place with my family and now a piece of our legacy is here.” The exhibit celebrates her work on Sesame Street, especially her role as Gabrielle, while also shining a light on her passion for music and youth empowerment.

Music as a message: ‘Cinderella Sweep’ and mentoring girls

Piphus recently released her second album, Cinderella Sweep, in July. The album is filled with powerful songs about confidence, dreams, and never giving up. But what makes it even more special is who’s on it. Over 53 young girls helped record tracks for the album.

“I had this song called ‘Stop Me Now’ that I knew would inspire young girls,” said Piphus. She worked with the nonprofit group Saving Our Daughters to give the girls a chance to experience music-making firsthand. The goal was not just to sing, but to believe in themselves.

For three years, Piphus has been mentoring girls through music. The album’s themes include perseverance, self-love, and boldness—values she hopes every child learns early.

A growing legacy beyond the screen

Though many know her for her puppet work, Piphus is quickly becoming just as respected for her music. Her first album, May & Them Pups: Spaceships & Dreams, also focused on big dreams and imagination. Now, she plans to take Cinderella Sweep on tour to reach even more children.

Piphus hopes the exhibit and her songs will encourage kids to follow their own creative paths. “I hope it inspires generations to come to do something that’s unique and different,” she said.

From museum halls to music stages, Piphus continues to lift young voices—one song and one puppet at a time.
