Longtime U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a trailblazing Democrat and the first Black female mayoral candidate of Houston, is facing a personal battle as she seeks her 16th term in Congress.
The veteran lawmaker has announced that she has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and is undergoing treatment.

“My adult life has been defined by my faith in God, my love for humanity and my commitment to public service,” Jackson Lee stated.
