Trailblazing Moment at UMass
Qeanu Smith made history as the first Black drum major of the prestigious UMass Minuteman Marching Band (UMMB).
Her appointment last May marked a significant milestone for the renowned musical ensemble. This achievement exemplified the band’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
“In honor of Black History Month, we’re recognizing an important part of UMMB History that was made this past year. Qeanu Smith was added to our Drum Major team last May. She is the first Black Drum Major the UMMB has ever had,” announced the official UMMB social media account months ago.
A Seasoned Leader Within the Band
Qeanu Smith, a senior majoring in music education and saxophone performance, has been an integral part of the UMMB for several years.
Prior to her historic appointment, she served as the Section Leader for the Tenor Saxophone Section during her junior year, showcasing her exceptional leadership skills.
A Well-Rounded Individual
Beyond her musical pursuits, Smith is a multifaceted individual. As a sister of Tau Beta Sigma, a national honorary band service fraternity, she actively contributes to the band’s community service initiatives.
Additionally, the Shirley, MA native works as a bus driver for UMass Transit, balancing her academic and extracurricular commitments with a part-time job.
In her free time, Smith indulges in her passion for shoe collecting and cherishes moments spent with friends. Her diverse interests and well-rounded personality have undoubtedly contributed to her success as a respected leader within the UMMB.
