Historic Hire at TSU Breaks Barriers in College Hockey
Tennessee State University (TSU) has made a groundbreaking move by appointing Duanté Abercrombie as the inaugural head coach of the men’s hockey team.
This historic hire makes Abercrombie the first head coach of a hockey program at a historically Black college or university (HBCU). Abercrombie expressed his enthusiasm for this opportunity, stating, “I am incredibly excited to embark on building this program, supported by God, my family, TSU students, alumni, and all those eagerly awaiting this moment.”
He firmly believes that TSU will be recognized as a powerhouse on the ice and a program that enriches the lives of student-athletes through the lessons learned at the university.
Commitment to Diversity and Excellence
TSU President Glenda Glover praised Abercrombie’s appointment as a testament to the university’s dedication to breaking barriers. She highlighted the profound significance of bringing hockey to an HBCU, providing students with unparalleled opportunities to enrich their college experience.
“This bold move builds upon the TSU legacy that we had envisioned for the institution as a comprehensive university offering a wide range of academic and extracurricular programs, with a continued commitment to excellence.” – Glenda Glover, TSU President
Pioneering Presence in Hockey
Abercrombie’s impact extends beyond the coaching realm. He is an inaugural member of the National Hockey League Coaches’ Association’s BIPOC Coaches Program and has been mentored by notable Black hockey figures like Neal Henderson and Graeme Townshend.
“Duante will prove to be one of the best hires in College Hockey. He brings a wealth of experience that is rooted in a high degree of character, compassion, and integrity. He will prove to be an incredible role model for ALL members of the Tennessee State University community.” – Graeme Townshend, former NHL player and President of Townshend Hockey Skating Systems
Expanding Athletic Offerings
In addition to men’s hockey, TSU’s Director of Athletics, Dr. Mikki Allen, plans to expand the university’s athletic offerings between 2025 and 2028 to include baseball, women’s soccer, and women’s swimming and diving.
Allen expressed confidence in Abercrombie’s ability to build a reputable program and inspire student-athletes to excel both on and off the ice.
Trailblazer in Hockey Community
Abercrombie’s dedication to hockey and community involvement has garnered recognition from the Washington Capitals, who nominated him for the 2024 Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award.
Furthermore, his extensive experience includes stints with the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, the San Jose Sharks training camp, and the Boston Bruins’ scouting mentorship program.
