Shattering Glass Ceilings: A Trailblazer’s Journey

Nicole D. Adams has become the first Black female Captain with The Maryland-National Capital Park Police.

Her groundbreaking accomplishment not only breaks barriers but also serves as an inspiration for aspiring women in law enforcement.

A Decorated Career in Law Enforcement

Adams’ journey in law enforcement began in 1994 when she joined the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C.

Two years later, she transferred to the Maryland-National Capital Park Police, Montgomery County Division, where she has served in various roles, including Officer, Detective, Patrol Sergeant, and Lieutenant in Patrol, Administration, and Internal Affairs.

“It’s important that the police department I work for represents the diverse communities we serve throughout Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, and the National Capital Region. We seek diverse police candidates to join our ranks,” Adams said.

Pioneering Milestones and Initiatives

Throughout her career, Adams has achieved several pioneering milestones. She became the agency’s first female Firearms Instructor and later, the first African-American female promoted to the rank of Assistant Chief in the history of the Park Police.

Currently serving as the Assistant Chief of the Support Branch, Adams is also the agency’s secondary Public Information Officer.

A Legacy of Strong Women

Adams credits her mother, Betty Green, as her strongest influence, instilling in her the values of integrity, courage, accountability, and leadership.

She also draws inspiration from the strong women in her family, including her great-grandmother Bettie Mann Giles and grandmother Dorothy Giles-Williams, who paved the way for her success.

Championing Diversity and Representation

Aligned with the 30X30 Police Initiative, which aims to increase the representation of women in police recruit classes to 30% by 2030, Adams is committed to fostering diversity within the ranks of law enforcement.

The Montgomery County Park Police currently boasts a 29% representation of women law enforcement officers.
