First Black Women-Owned Bookstore Opens in Evanston
Zora’s Place is set to open soon on Washington Street inside the Aux Wellness Collective. This bookstore will be the first Black women-owned bookshop in Evanston, Illinois.
The founder, author L’Oreal Thompson Payton, hopes to create more than just a store. She wants a safe, welcoming space where people can find books that reflect their culture, history, and dreams.
A Bookstore With a Community Mission
Zora’s Place aims to celebrate stories written by and for Black women and other people of color. It will feature a range of books, from fiction to memoirs and children’s literature.
Payton shared during an interview with ABC7 Chicago that she wants the space to encourage healing, connection, and joy. The name “Zora’s Place” honors literary icon Zora Neale Hurston, reminding visitors of a long legacy of Black women storytellers.
A Hub for Events and Local Connection
Besides books, Zora’s Place will host events, book clubs, and conversations that bring people together. Payton wants it to be a place where readers feel seen and supported.
The store will also support wellness and community care, aligning with the values of the Aux Wellness Collective where it’s located. Events will often focus on mental health, creativity, and empowerment.
