Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett Unveils Caribbean’s First Innovation Township in Montego Bay Transformation

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett has unveiled Jamaica’s groundbreaking plan for the Caribbean’s first Tourism Innovation Township. The ambitious project includes the region’s tallest hotel tower in Rose Hall, St. James. Moreover, the development will transform Montego Bay into an unprecedented tourism destination.

On June 28, Bartlett announced construction plans for the 33-story Moon Palace tower during the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association meeting. The minister emphasized the historic significance of this revolutionary development. “This is a game-changer for tourism in the region,” Bartlett declared to industry leaders.

The innovation township represents a completely new approach to Caribbean tourism development. Furthermore, it combines hospitality infrastructure with community empowerment and sustainable economic growth. The project establishes Jamaica as a pioneer in tourism innovation across the entire Caribbean region.

Caribbean’s Largest Hotel Cluster Creates 5,000-Room Tourism Hub

The new township will feature the Caribbean’s largest concentration of hotel rooms in a single area. Over 5,000 rooms will be within walking distance across four mega-resorts: Unico, Hard Rock, Moon Palace, and Iberostar. This unprecedented clustering strategy will create economies of scale never seen before in Caribbean tourism.

Bartlett explained that the development functions as a circular economic hub with innovative resource sharing. Hotels will provide electricity and water to the nearby community through integrated infrastructure systems. Meanwhile, local residents will supply goods and services directly to resort operations.

The circular economy model ensures mutual benefit between tourism facilities and local communities. Additionally, this approach creates sustainable employment opportunities beyond traditional hotel jobs. Therefore, the township addresses long-standing concerns about tourism’s impact on local populations.

Community Integration Through STEM Education and Local Manufacturing

The innovation township prioritizes community development through comprehensive infrastructure improvements. Plans include introducing a STEM school to prepare local youth for technology-driven careers. Healthcare facilities will receive significant upgrades to serve both residents and tourists effectively.

Local manufacturing will play a crucial role in the township’s economic model. “We are building a model where backyard farming, the production of condiments, sheets, pillowcases, and other essentials will be done right there in the community, feeding directly into the hotel supply chain,” Bartlett explained.

The project supports light manufacturing and cottage industries that directly supply resort operations. Supermarkets and retail outlets will provide additional economic opportunities for local entrepreneurs. Consequently, the development creates a comprehensive ecosystem that benefits multiple stakeholder groups simultaneously.

Montego Bay Tourism Renaissance Adds 10,000 Hotel Rooms by 2030

Jamaica’s tourism expansion extends far beyond the innovation township project. By 2030, the island will add 10,000 new hotel rooms through major resort expansions. Harmony Cove, Palladium, Bahia Principe, and existing mega-resorts will significantly increase their capacity.

Two new Sandals properties will contribute to this growth, including one in Runaway Bay. The newly announced AC Marriott in Montego Bay adds another luxury option for visitors. Additionally, commercial development on the Rollins lands will feature service stations and retail outlets.

“Montego Bay is on the verge of an unprecedented tourism renaissance,” Bartlett declared with confidence. He emphasized that this level of coordinated investment has never occurred in Jamaica or the broader Caribbean. “This model brings the people with it. It does not leave them behind. It is a future where tourism doesn’t just create jobs and builds communities,” the minister concluded.

The Rose Hall Developments project will complement the innovation township with additional commercial facilities. These developments will create a comprehensive tourism corridor that transforms the entire region. Furthermore, the integrated approach ensures sustainable growth that benefits all stakeholders involved.
