Taylor Townsend has made tennis history by becoming the first mother to claim the WTA World No. 1 doubles ranking. The 29-year-old achieved the milestone after reaching the final at the 2025 Mubadala Citi DC Open with partner Shuai Zhang. Her incredible rise comes just three years after giving birth to her son, Adyn.
“This is the most satisfying journey I could ever have had,” Townsend said after her win. “Attaining No. 1 after having my son, going through all the challenges—it makes this moment amazing.”
A Historic Milestone for Mothers in Tennis
Townsend’s achievement breaks barriers in a sport where few mothers return to elite competition. She overtook Katerina Siniakova, who held the top spot for 46 weeks. Now, Townsend stands as the 50th woman—and only the 13th American—to reach No. 1 in doubles.
Her success sends a powerful message to athlete moms everywhere. “It feels like a dream and is one of the highlights of my career,” she said. Fellow players, including Coco Gauff and Madison Keys, celebrated her inspiring journey.
Overcoming Challenges After Motherhood
Returning to pro tennis after childbirth is tough, but Townsend did it while raising a toddler. She took time off after Adyn’s birth in 2021 and didn’t play a full season until 2023. Still, she climbed back faster than many expected.
“This is my third full season back since having AJ,” she explained. “To accomplish this in three years is honestly phenomenal.” Her determination has made her a role model for working mothers in sports.
A Stellar Year Leading to No. 1
Townsend’s rise wasn’t overnight. Over the past year, she won the Australian Open doubles title with Siniakova and triumphed at the WTA 1000 Dubai Championships. She also defended her 2024 DC Open title with Asia Muhammad.
Her consistency paid off. Now, as the new doubles No. 1, she proves that motherhood doesn’t limit greatness. “I’ve always seen her as one of the best,” said Gauff. “She deserves this.”
Inspiring the Next Generation
Townsend’s story resonates beyond tennis. For athlete moms, she’s proof that dreams don’t end with parenthood. Her success challenges stereotypes and opens doors for future generations.
“I hope this shows what’s possible,” she said. With her name now in the record books, Townsend’s legacy is just beginning.
