Sophie L. Gibson Steps In as First Black Woman to Lead Saint Augustine’s Board During Crucial Accreditation Challenge

Historic Leadership Change at Saint Augustine’s University

Saint Augustine’s University (SAU) has made history by appointing Sophie L. Gibson as the first Black woman to chair its Board of Trustees. The move comes as the university fights to keep its accreditation and secure its future.

Gibson, a respected Atlanta business leader, replaces Brian A. Boulware, who led the board since 2019. Her appointment also marks another milestone—both the chair and vice chair roles are now held by women, with alumna V. Lynette Mitchell serving as second-in-command.

“It has been a privilege to serve as Chair during a time of great challenge and transformation,” Boulware said in a statement. “I am confident in Chair Gibson’s leadership to guide SAU forward.”

A Critical Win for Accreditation

Earlier this month, SAU secured a major victory—a federal injunction allowing it to keep accreditation while appealing a previous ruling. The decision ensures students can continue their education without disruption.

The university also launched the “Believe in SAU: A Falcon Is Not an Ordinary Bird” campaign to raise funds for operations and legal defense. Donors can contribute directly to the school or its legal team, Alston & Bird L.L.P.

“This is a tremendous win for Saint Augustine’s and, most importantly, for our students,” said interim president Marcus H. Burgess. “We will open our doors on Sept. 2 as an accredited institution, just as we promised.”

A New Chapter for the HBCU

Gibson and Mitchell now lead SAU during a pivotal moment. Both have emphasized unity and strategic planning to strengthen the university’s future.

“We are turning the page to an exciting new era for SAU,” Mitchell said. “One guided by a clear strategic direction and a renewed Falcon spirit.”

Gibson also expressed gratitude for supporters, stating, “This injunction is not just a legal reprieve—it’s proof of our community’s strength.” With fresh leadership and recent legal wins, SAU is fighting to preserve its legacy.
