Retired Sgt. Robert Grier, one of the first Black firefighters to help integrate the Winston-Salem Fire Department, has died at age 104.
Grier was part of the historic “Original 8,” a group of eight Black firefighters hired on March 1, 1951. Their arrival helped change the future of the department and created new opportunities for Black firefighters who followed.
The Winston-Salem Fire Department honored Grier’s decades of service. Officials said his legacy remains deeply connected to the department’s history.
