A Bold Vision for Houston Wine Lovers
Pur Noire Urban Wineries stands as Houston’s first Black-owned urban winery and tasting room. Founded by Carissa and Kenneth Stephens, the brand continues to shape the city’s wine culture with premium blends and artistic events. Since opening in 2021, Pur Noire has become known for its rich wines and vibrant experiences that celebrate both community and creativity.
The Stephenses ship their wines to 42 states, making their products accessible far beyond Houston. Their vision combines luxury with culture, blending high-quality winemaking with an immersive tasting experience that connects guests to the stories behind each bottle.
Founders Who Turned Passion into a Movement
Carissa, a certified sommelier, and Kenneth began their wine journey after a trip to Italy. Their visit sparked a desire to create wines that celebrate culture and history. “We really fortified our passion for wine, understanding that it’s so much more than just a drink in a glass, but it’s art, history, and culture,” Carissa said.
Starting in 2018, the couple crafted their first red blend, Pur Epiphany. Though the pandemic delayed their plans, they adapted by hosting pop-up events and brunches. This resilience set the stage for the grand opening of their downtown Houston tasting room.
Premium Wines with a Cultural Touch
Pur Noire offers nine signature wines, from sparkling varieties to bold reds. Their award-winning Napa Valley Merlot, rated 93 points, remains a favorite among wine enthusiasts. Other popular blends include Pur Euphoria, a rosé, and the spicy “OG” red, Pur Epiphany.
Each wine reflects the couple’s commitment to quality and storytelling. Guests who visit the tasting room embark on a guided journey through each pour, learning about the grapes, origins, and flavor profiles. Carissa and Kenneth have built an experience that is as educational as it is indulgent.
A Tasting Room Experience Like No Other
Located in downtown Houston, the Pur Noire tasting room is known for its intimate and artistic vibe. The space often features live music, food pairings, and private events, making each visit unique. Walk-in guests are welcome, but reservations are encouraged to ensure a personalized experience.
“Our tasting room is all about connection,” Kenneth shared. “We tell the story of each wine and take guests on a wine adventure.” This dedication to hospitality has helped Pur Noire build a loyal following, both locally and nationwide through their wine club and shipping services.
Leading with Innovation and Community
In 2022, Pur Noire earned the Innovator of the Year/Who Got Next Award from the HUE Society. This recognition reflects the couple’s drive to challenge norms and expand representation in the wine industry, where less than one percent of global producers are African American.
“We are proud to be part of this change,” Carissa said. “We’re creating moments that bring people together, one customer and one glass at a time.”
