First Woman to Lead the Iconic Marching 100 Band
Florida A&M University has appointed Oluwamodupe Oloyede as the head drum major of its world-famous Marching 100 band. This makes her the first woman ever to lead the group in its 133-year history. She will take center field at the 2025 Orange Blossom Classic in Miami on August 30 and blow the first whistle to start the show.
“It’s an immense honor,” Oloyede told WCTV. “It’s still settling in that this is happening.” Her new role not only marks a personal victory but also a major step forward for representation in HBCU band culture.
A Childhood Dream Now Realized
Oloyede grew up in Atlanta and first fell in love with marching bands at age 11. She started out playing the saxophone in middle school and later explored dance. But it was her high school band program that truly won her heart.
She began her college journey at Howard University but transferred to Florida A&M with one goal—joining the Marching 100. “I thought I lost my shot,” she shared. “But as God would have it, I still ascended to leadership.”
More Than Just Music—Discipline and Dedication
Now a senior with a background in theater, Oloyede brings a unique style to her performances. She believes being head drum major means setting the example on and off the field. “I say nobody graduates from discipline,” she said. “You need more discipline to do more work and I like that kind of pressure.”
Oloyede also understands what it means to carry the hopes of others. “Being the head drum major this year, the beautiful burden of it is the integrity of the game,” she told Sports Illustrated. “I have to do it first before I expect others to follow.”
A Legacy of Greatness and Representation
Oloyede is only the second woman to wear the drum major uniform at FAMU. The first, Cori Bostick, never led the line. This makes Oloyede’s achievement especially powerful in the world of HBCU music. “To the women who came before me, who were more than qualified, it’s in your honor,” she said.
The Marching 100 is known for high standards and iconic appearances—from Super Bowls to presidential inaugurations. It was recently crowned 2024 Band of the Year at the Celebration Bowl in Atlanta.
Inspiring a New Generation of Young Women
Oloyede wants her story to spark ambition in young girls who dream big. Her advice? “You got this. Let your work speak for itself and nobody can deny you.”
As the Marching 100 prepares for its 2025 season, all eyes will be on Miami, where a young woman will blow the opening whistle and step into leadership with power, pride, and purpose.
