Black Heritage Parade Returns to Norwalk After 27 Years

Norwalk is welcoming back its Black Heritage Parade after nearly three decades. The African American Association of Norwalk is leading the effort, bringing the community together for a day of pride and celebration.

The parade will take place on Saturday, September 13 at 11:00 AM. Following the march, an all-day festival will continue until 6:00 PM at 50 Washington Street Plaza. Organizers say the goal is to celebrate unity, showcase Black culture, and honor the contributions of Norwalk’s African American community.

A Celebration of Unity and Culture in Norwalk

The event is more than just a parade. Marching bands, local performers, and community leaders will fill the streets with energy and culture. The day will close with cultural showcases that highlight music, food, and traditions from across the African diaspora.

Organizers hope the event strengthens ties among residents and builds momentum for an annual tradition. “This parade is about celebrating community, honoring heritage, and creating joy that everyone can share,” said an association spokesperson.

How Residents Can Get Involved

The African American Association is inviting schools, community groups, and residents to participate. Marchers are encouraged to walk the route and represent their organizations or neighborhoods.

Local businesses can also support the parade as sponsors or vendors. Food trucks, artisans, and small businesses will have the chance to share their products and services with attendees. Organizers stress that the event is for everyone, urging families to line the parade route and join the celebration.

Building Toward a Lasting Tradition

Reviving the Black Heritage Parade after 27 years signals a fresh start for Norwalk. Organizers want to ensure that this is not just a one-time event but the beginning of a lasting tradition.

“This is a day of joy, unity, and cultural pride,” said the association. “We are writing the next chapter of Norwalk’s story, together.”

The African American Association hopes the success of this year’s parade inspires future generations to carry on the legacy of celebration and community building.
