Affordable housing milestone celebrates Dorsey’s legacy of leadership and equity
The city of Ypsilanti has taken a major step toward community renewal with the opening of Dorsey Estates, the first new for-sale housing development in the area in over 40 years. Named in honor of Mattie Dorsey, Ypsilanti’s first Black councilwoman, the new community highlights both the city’s growing commitment to housing equity and the enduring impact of Black women’s leadership in civic progress.
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony held earlier this month, residents and local leaders gathered to celebrate the new neighborhood and the woman whose work continues to inspire it. The development sits on a former brownfield site and now stands as a model of affordable homeownership opportunities for working families.
A vision for affordable homeownership
Dorsey Estates includes a mix of townhomes, duplexes, and cottages designed to provide affordable, middle-income, and market-rate options. The development marks a turning point for Ypsilanti residents who have long struggled with rising housing costs and limited homeownership opportunities.
New homeowner Arnetta Wilson expressed the joy of stepping into her own home on October 3. “When a person purchases a home, I believe that they feel better because it’s theirs,” she said. The project’s focus on affordability aims to restore that sense of pride and stability for more families.
With prices starting around $96,000, Dorsey Estates offers residents a chance to invest in their future. Currently, the demand is high, with more than 400 people on the waitlist for the next phase of homes.
