Naomi Beckwith Makes History at Documenta 16
Naomi Beckwith has been appointed artistic director of Documenta 16, set for Kassel, Germany, in 2027. She is the first Black woman to hold the position and only the second American-born director in the exhibition’s history.
Beckwith, currently the Guggenheim Museum’s deputy director and chief curator, announced her team of four female curators. Together, they will guide one of the world’s most influential art festivals into a new era.
First All-Female Curatorial Team in Documenta’s History
For the first time since its founding in 1955, Documenta will be led by an all-female artistic team. Beckwith’s collaborators are Carla Acevedo-Yates, Romi Crawford, Mayra A. Rodríguez Castro, and Xiaoyu Weng.
They will oversee exhibitions, publications, and programming for Documenta 16, which will run from June 12 to September 19, 2027. Beckwith said she admires the team’s “independence of spirit and thought,” highlighting their respect for both artists and audiences.
Diverse Expertise from Around the World
Each curator brings unique expertise. Acevedo-Yates specializes in contemporary art of the Americas, focusing on the Caribbean and Latin American diasporas. Crawford is a professor of visual and critical studies in Chicago and founder of platforms exploring Black Arts Movement history.
Rodríguez Castro is a writer and publicist with a background in North American studies. Weng, who has led departments at major institutions, focuses on Asian art and global perspectives. Together, the team represents a wide cultural and intellectual range.
A Fresh Start After a Turbulent Past
Beckwith’s appointment follows a difficult period for Documenta. The previous edition in 2022 faced heavy criticism, leading to the resignation of its entire selection committee. This forced the organization to restart the process for 2027.
Sven Schoeller, chairman of Documenta’s supervisory board, praised Beckwith’s appointment. He called it “the start of a new future for Documenta,” signaling hope for stability and renewed relevance in the global art world.
Looking Ahead to 2027
The Documenta exhibition is held once every five years and is widely seen as a barometer for contemporary art. Under Beckwith’s leadership, many expect the event to highlight pressing social and cultural issues through diverse voices.
With the combined strength of her historic appointment and the groundbreaking all-female team, Documenta 16 is set to mark a turning point in the festival’s 70-year history.
