CHICAGO, IL – This past spring, an impressive group of African American medical professionals came together to open Premier Health Urgent Care – the first ever Black-owned urgent care center in Chicago’s South Side. Their goal? To provide this underserved community with greater access to quality, affordable healthcare.
Bridging the Healthcare Gap in Hyde Park
Led by ER physician Dr. Reuben C. Rutland and co-founders Drs. Airron Richardson, Michael A. McGee, and former Chicago Bears player Gregory Primus, Premier Health launched in the Hyde Park neighborhood.
This area has long suffered from a lack of nearby healthcare options. As Dr. Richardson explained, “You had to go to a completely different neighborhood several miles away.”
Premier Health provides locals with walk-in treatment for illnesses and injuries at a fraction of hospital ER costs. Says Dr. Rutland, “We’re a supplement to doctor’s offices and ERs, helping relieve the stress on both.” On-site x-rays, labs, and even COVID tests are available.
More Than Just Medicine: Giving Back to the Community
But for these doctors, Premier Health represents even more than quality medical care. The center also offers mental health services and has pledged to donate a percentage of profits to anti-violence youth programs.
“It’s good to give back in some way,” says urgent care physician Dr. Renita White. As the pandemic continues disproportionately impacting Chicago’s Black community, healthcare hubs like Premier – filled with doctors devoted to their neighbors – are invaluable assets.
Rave Reviews and Plans to Expand
Since opening in Spring 2019, Premier Health has seen glowing community reviews and increasing demand. Today, the center employs 50% more staff compared to pre-COVID days. Discussions are already underway about potential expansion.
“We want to save the world, one patient at a time,” says trauma surgeon Dr. Reuben Rutland. With their trailblazing urgent care, this group of physicians is certainly on its way toward achieving that noble goal.
