A career pivot in her mid-40s changed everything for Judy Koloko. The British-Nigerian entrepreneur left a thriving fashion career behind. Her goal was to build something with deeper purpose.
That decision led to The Steam Bar, a premium haircare brand. This spring, Koloko traveled to Atlanta to celebrate a major milestone. Her brand became the first Black British-owned company accepted into Sephora’s Accelerate program.
The celebration took place at The Dirty Tea, a Black woman-owned tea room. It marked a new chapter for a brand built on scalp health and self-worth.
From Fashion Industry Success To Haircare Entrepreneur
Koloko’s career before The Steam Bar was already impressive. She dined with Karl Lagerfeld and built relationships with Anna Wintour and Miuccia Prada. Few would expect her to walk away from that world.
Yet she did exactly that. Purpose mattered more to her than prestige. She explained her thinking clearly during the brand’s launch event.
“In my mid-40s, I pivoted,” Koloko explained. “I had an amazing career. I’ve traveled the world. I gave it all up because I thought this is going to be bigger than all that. And this has got more purpose for me.”
The Steam Bar Founder Finds Gap In Black Haircare Market
Travel played a surprising role in Koloko’s next move. She struggled to find quality Black haircare products during trips abroad. That frustration sparked an idea that wouldn’t leave her alone.
Rather than wait for someone else to solve the problem, she built her own solution. Koloko began developing a haircare line centered on scalp health, not just hair treatment. This distinction became the foundation of her brand.
The gap she noticed reflects a broader challenge many Black consumers face. Products focused specifically on scalp wellness remained hard to find. Koloko decided to change that reality herself.
Selfridges Launch Sparks The Steam Bar’s Retail Journey
Koloko’s pitch to Selfridges became a turning point. She walked in with nothing but a laptop and an idea. What happened next surprised even her.
“I literally walked into Selfridges with just my laptop and said, ‘I’ve got this idea,’” Koloko recalled. After hearing her full vision, the retailer made a bold move.
“They said, ‘Please don’t go and see Harrods, we want you to launch exclusively with us,’” Koloko shared. Executives told her they hadn’t seen a proposition like hers in years. The Steam Bar launched exclusively at Selfridges in late 2023.
Sephora Accelerate Program Opens Doors For Black British Brand
Momentum kept building after the Selfridges launch. Koloko won a spot in the Sephora Accelerate Program in January 2025. This achievement marked a major step toward U.S. expansion.
Following the program’s completion in June 2025, Sephora invited the brand into its assortment. The Steam Bar officially launched online in April with six signature products. These include a clarifying shampoo, hydrating conditioner, and scalp microbiome serum.
The lineup also features a detox scalp mask and a satin bonnet. The brand’s standout product remains its microwaveable steam cap. Demand has been so strong that it’s currently sold out online.
Atlanta Becomes Next Frontier For The Steam Bar Brand
With a foothold in the U.S. market secured, Koloko has set her sights on Atlanta. She sees the city as a cultural epicenter for Black hair. It’s a natural fit for her brand’s experiential approach.
“Atlanta has always been the hub for Black hair,” Koloko said. “I think the people here deserve what we’re creating.” She believes the brand’s in-person experience sets it apart from typical haircare lines.
Customers who tried The Steam Bar experience in Selfridges echoed that sentiment. “I have had amazing haircare experiences in my life, but this exceeded anything that I have ever imagined,” one customer told Koloko. For her, the mission goes beyond product quality.
“It’s not just about the amazing haircare treatment; it’s the service, it’s about the education, it’s about being part of the community, and ultimately, it’s about feeling good about yourself,” Koloko said.
Brand Identity Reflects Deeper Message About Self-Worth
The Steam Bar’s packaging carries personal meaning for Koloko. Its vibrant green and gold colors honor her Nigerian roots. Every product also displays the brand’s tagline: What Lies Beneath.
That phrase applies literally to scalp care, but its meaning runs deeper. Koloko, a proud wig wearer herself, explained the layered message behind it.
“It’s not about your hijab, your wig, your protective hair covering your scalp, whatever it is you’re putting on your scalp; it should go deeper than that,” Koloko said. “What lies beneath should be, ‘Who am I? What is my purpose? What is my calling?’ What this mission is about is us loving ourselves, honoring our crown.”
Family Legacy Drives Judy Koloko’s Bigger Mission
Behind the brand’s success lies a deeply personal motivation. Koloko is a mother of two. Her son currently attends college on scholarship, something she mentions with visible pride.
Her daughter, now 31, faced a life-altering health crisis at nine months old. A fall triggered a brain bleed, leading to three months in intensive care. Her daughter now lives with cerebral palsy, blindness, and epilepsy.
Despite these challenges, Koloko describes her daughter as a source of strength. “She’s blind, and she’s epileptic, but she is a gladiator,” Koloko said. “She is the reason I am the woman I am today. My ultimate mission is actually to build a care home, which will be her legacy.”
Seven Years Of Building Toward A Bigger Purpose
Koloko found plenty of success during her corporate career. Still, she says nothing compares to the fulfillment of building The Steam Bar. The last seven years have shaped her most meaningful work yet.
“The Steam Bar is my calling,” Koloko said. She believes growing the brand will create impact far beyond business success. Her vision centers on people feeling seen and valued.
“I’ve built something that’s all about people being seen, people deserving and people belonging somewhere,” Koloko explained. Given her daughter’s complex needs, she says this mission carries even greater weight. Every milestone brings her closer to building lasting change for underrepresented communities.
