Lisa Cook Serves as First Black Woman on Federal Reserve Board Amid Mortgage Fraud Allegations

First Black Woman to Join Fed Board Under Scrutiny

Lisa Cook, the first African American woman on the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors, faces serious mortgage fraud allegations. Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte urged the Department of Justice to investigate her. Shortly after, President Trump called on her to resign or be fired.

Despite mounting pressure, Cook pushed back. She said she refuses to be “bullied” out of her position. She confirmed she is reviewing her records to answer any real questions and provide facts.

Mortgage Claims and Legal Review

The allegations center on Cook naming two separate properties — one in Michigan and one in Georgia — both as primary residences when securing mortgage loans in 2021. Experts say this can lead to better borrowing terms.

Pulte claims Cook may have falsified documents and failed to report rental income from her Atlanta condo. The Justice Department is reportedly reviewing the criminal referral.

Pressure From Trump and Calls for Resignation

President Trump amplified the allegations, demanding Cook’s resignation and even suggesting he would fire her if she did not step down. Despite this, legal scholars note Fed governors can only be removed “for cause,” making her dismissal unlikely.

Democrats have denounced these moves. Representative Maxine Waters and others say this is a politically motivated attack meant to undermine Fed independence and replace Cook with someone loyal to Trump’s policy goals.

Cook’s Background and Historic Role

Cook, appointed by President Biden in 2022, made history as the first Black woman and woman of color on the Fed board. She previously taught economics at Michigan State University and holds a PhD in economics.

Cook is recognized for her contributions to economic knowledge and mentorship of Black women economists. Her appointment marked a major milestone for representation in the field.
