Leon Bibb, Ohio’s First Black Prime Time News Anchor, to Share Four Decades of Journalism Insight at Stark NAACP Banquet

Leon Bibb Set to Keynote NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet

Leon Bibb, Ohio’s first Black prime time news anchor, will headline the Stark County NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet this year. The celebrated journalist will deliver the keynote address at the Kent State University Conference Center on October 17, 2025.

The annual event will highlight both his groundbreaking career and the banquet’s theme, “The Fierce Urgency of Now.” Organizers say the evening will not only honor Bibb’s voice in journalism but also spotlight the ongoing struggle for civil rights and equality.

Four Decades of Journalism Excellence

Bibb brings nearly 40 years of experience in Cleveland television news. He began his career in 1979 at WKYC, an NBC affiliate, where he worked for 16 years. Later, he joined WEWS-TV5, the ABC station in Cleveland, and stayed for 22 years.

At both stations, Bibb anchored major newscasts and reported on stories that shaped Ohio and beyond. Today, he serves as a senior reporter and commentator for 3News, continuing his trusted presence in households across the state.

A Family and Community Connection

Bibb is also the cousin of Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb, linking him to both media and civic leadership. His commitment to storytelling has always gone beyond headlines, offering thoughtful commentary that connects with communities.

Organizers believe his speech will inspire attendees to reflect on the role of journalism in advancing justice and amplifying truth. His career stands as proof of the impact that representation and dedication bring to the newsroom.

NAACP Banquet to Celebrate Equality and Action

The Stark County NAACP banquet will include a reception at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m., and the program beginning at 7 p.m. Alongside Bibb’s keynote, awards will be presented to individuals recognized for advancing justice and equality in the region.

Tickets are priced at $100 each, with proceeds supporting the organization’s ongoing work. The evening is designed to bring the community together under the urgency of addressing social justice challenges today.

A Theme That Resonates in 2025

The NAACP’s 2025 theme, “The Fierce Urgency of Now,” underscores the importance of immediate action for civil rights. Leaders say the message reflects the growing need for communities to come together and build lasting change.

Bibb’s presence at the banquet adds depth to that theme. With his decades of reporting and commentary, he has witnessed and documented the nation’s evolving fight for equality. His insights are expected to spark dialogue and encourage continued progress.
