Laila Edwards has etched her name into Olympic history. The 22-year-old forward became the first Black woman to score a goal for Team USA in women’s hockey at the Winter Olympics. Her historic shot helped secure a dominant win over Canada during the group stage in Milan, Italy.
Even more, the goal pushed Team USA to the top of the standings as they head into the medal round. Edwards did not just score. She delivered at a critical moment against one of the team’s biggest rivals.

Team USA defeated Canada with four straight goals during the group stage. Edwards sealed the win with the final shot of the game. That goal made her the first Black woman to score for the U.S. women’s hockey team at the Olympics.
As a result, her achievement goes beyond the scoreboard. It represents progress in a sport where Black women are rarely seen at the highest level. Moreover, Edwards understands the weight of that moment.
“You know, I get to be the first of something and a role model for others,” Edwards said.

From Figure Skating to Olympic Hockey Star
Edwards did not start her journey in hockey. Instead, she began with figure skating as a child in Northeast Ohio. Her father encouraged the move to make the transition to hockey easier.
“I started with figure skating. It was my dad’s plan all along just to make the transition to hockey easier,” she recalled. “The tutus and the puffy. Yeah, no, I wasn’t a fan.”
Eventually, she found her place on the ice rink in full gear. Hockey became more than a sport. It became what she calls her “safe space.”
Breaking Barriers for Black Women in Hockey
Although Edwards felt confident on the ice, she often stood out. At times, she was the only girl on her team. Still, she pushed forward.
“I definitely felt like I belonged, but there were times when there was a bit of intimidation,” she said. “It’s my safe space where I just feel like I can be myself.”
Her talent became clear early. She joined the U.S. National Hockey Team in 2023. Since then, she has grown into a key player. Furthermore, she wants young girls to know they belong in hockey too.
“There’s no rule book that says hockey is for boys,” Edwards explained. “There’s no reason you shouldn’t do it if you love it.”
Olympic Dreams and Family Sacrifice
Edwards’ Olympic debut carries deep personal meaning. Behind every milestone stands her family’s sacrifice. They gave their time, money, and support to help her succeed.
“I have had so many people help me get here, especially my family,” she said. “This is my best way of trying to say thank you… making them proud while representing our country.”
Now, she hopes to turn history into a gold medal finish. Team USA is positioned strongly as the medal round begins. If they continue their momentum, Edwards could add another achievement to her growing legacy.
Her goal already changed the narrative. However, the tournament is not over yet. And clearly, Laila Edwards is just getting started.
