Joi Harris to Lead DTE Energy as President and CEO
Joi Harris will soon become the first Black woman to lead DTE Energy, one of the Midwest’s largest power companies. Starting this September, she will step into the role of president and CEO of the Detroit-based utility provider.
A Detroit native and two-time graduate of Wayne State University, Harris is taking on the job at a key time. She will oversee DTE’s billion-dollar infrastructure plan and guide how Southeast Michigan powers its homes and businesses in the future.
“I am honored to take on this role at such a pivotal moment for our company and industry,” Harris said. “We are in a time of transformation, and I’m committed to executing our strategy with urgency.”
Over 30 Years of Experience at DTE
Harris started her career at DTE more than 30 years ago as a high school engineering co-op. Over time, she worked her way through different departments, learning how to manage operations and customer service. Her strong leadership led to her promotion as president and COO.
One of her biggest achievements was leading the development of the $1 billion Blue Water Energy Center. The project shows her ability to manage large-scale, modern energy solutions while staying focused on community needs.
Focus on Innovation, Equity, and Service
Harris has a clear vision for the future. She wants to modernize DTE’s infrastructure and improve service for customers. But her goals go beyond technology. She is also committed to equity, innovation, and lifting up local communities.
Outside of her day job, Harris supports youth education through groups like DAPCEP and the Skillman Foundation. Both programs help young people—especially in Detroit—explore science and engineering.
“I’m building the energy systems that will power future generations,” she shared, highlighting her long-term mission.
A Major Milestone for Detroit and the Industry
Harris’s appointment marks a major moment for Detroit and the broader energy industry. She’s not only the first Black woman to lead DTE, but also one of the few to hold such a position across the entire sector.
Her journey proves that years of service, dedication, and purpose-driven leadership can lead to powerful change. As she steps into this top role, her story sends a message of hope and possibility for many others.
