This renewed attention is introducing younger audiences to a bold figure who used performance, politics, and activism to challenge the system.

First Black Drag Queen to Run for President Inspired a Movement

Born Terence Alan Smith, Joan Jett Blakk entered the national spotlight in 1992. That year, Blakk launched a presidential campaign that would challenge political norms and demand visibility for overlooked communities.

At the time, the United States was in the middle of the devastating AIDS crisis. Many LGBTQ+ communities felt ignored by national leadership. As a result, Blakk used humor, performance, and fearless activism to bring attention to urgent issues.

Blakk also made history as the first and only Black drag queen to run for president. The campaign quickly gained attention across activist circles and media spaces.

AIDS Crisis Sparked Joan Jett Blakk’s Political Activism

Blakk’s campaign did not happen in isolation. It emerged during a period of grief, anger, and political frustration. Thousands of lives were being affected by HIV and AIDS, while many activists demanded stronger action.

At that time, Blakk joined forces with Queer Nation Chicago. Together, they used political theater and public organizing to confront silence around the crisis.

The campaign became more than a performance. It became a call for justice, healthcare awareness, and political accountability during a national emergency.
