Jerry Williams Moves Closer to Making History as Lake County’s First Black Sheriff After Strong Primary Victory in Indiana Election

Jerry Williams Makes History in Lake County Sheriff Race

Jerry Williams is now one step closer to making history after winning the Democratic primary for Lake County sheriff in Indiana. With strong support from voters and a packed celebration filled with cheers, Williams emerged as one of the biggest winners on election night.

If he wins the general election in November, Williams will become the first Black sheriff in Lake County history. That possibility has already created excitement across Northwest Indiana, especially in communities that have long pushed for broader representation in local leadership.

Supporters filled the Dean and Barbara White Community Center as Williams walked into the room shortly before 10 p.m. Cheers quickly turned into chants of “We Want Jerry,” showing just how much momentum his campaign has built.

Strong Primary Victory Positions Jerry Williams for November Election

Williams secured victory in a crowded Democratic field, earning 10,137 votes out of the 38,741 ballots cast. That gave him 26% of the total vote, enough to move ahead of his closest challengers and secure the nomination.

His closest opponent, Steve Flores, received 8,447 votes, while Edward Jenkins followed with 6,916 votes. The results showed that Williams was able to build support across different voter groups in one of the region’s most watched local races.

Now, Williams is preparing for the general election, where he will face Republican candidate David Crane Jr., who ran unopposed in his primary. Because Democrats have traditionally performed strongly in Lake County, many political observers see Williams as the early favorite heading into November.

Law Enforcement Experience Strengthens Williams’ Leadership Profile

One reason many voters have connected with Williams is his long background in public safety and law enforcement. He spent years serving as an officer with the Indiana State Police and also briefly served as interim police chief of the Gary Police Department.

That combination of state and city leadership experience has helped shape his campaign message. Supporters say his record gives him both the experience and local understanding needed to lead one of Indiana’s most important county law enforcement offices.

Speaking to supporters after his victory, Williams reflected on the journey.

“This has been a tremendous experience,” he said. “This is only one part of this chapter, and we are humbled by this process.”

Lake County Elections Reshape the Political Landscape

While Williams’ victory was one of the night’s biggest stories, several other races also reshaped the political future of Lake County. Local candidates connected to Gary secured important wins in county council races, setting up competitive general election contests in November.

These results could bring major leadership changes across county government. At the same time, congressional and township races also revealed how voters in Northwest Indiana are thinking about representation, public service, and political direction heading into the fall.

For now, however, much of the spotlight remains on Jerry Williams and the possibility of a historic victory that could reshape Lake County politics and inspire future Black leaders across Indiana.

November Election Could Deliver a Historic Milestone

The general election is scheduled for November 3, and all eyes will now be on whether Williams can complete what many supporters are calling a historic campaign.

If successful, his victory would not only break a racial barrier in Lake County law enforcement but also mark another important step in Black political leadership across Indiana.

For many voters, this race is now about more than one office. It is about history, representation, and the kind of leadership communities want to see moving forward.
