Jasmine Johnson Champions Representation as One of the First Black Women Redefining Pilates Through GRND in Atlanta

Building a Space Where Everyone Feels Seen

Jasmine Johnson is changing the way people see Pilates. As one of the first Black women to lead a studio dedicated to inclusivity and community, she founded GRND Pilates in Atlanta to bring visibility to those long left out of the wellness space.

“Visibility is extremely important,” Johnson said. “It’s important for us to walk into spaces and see us—whether it’s coming from the instructor being one of us, or just the people in class.”

For Johnson, GRND is more than a fitness studio. It’s a safe and empowering community where people can move, heal, and connect. Her faith and determination guide every step. “God has been the force behind all of this,” she said. “When he told me to go, I moved. No questions asked.”

Making Pilates More Inclusive and Accessible

Pilates has grown in popularity in recent years, especially among Black women who are reclaiming their space in the practice. Johnson recognizes how often the exercise has been portrayed as exclusive, but she’s intent on changing that narrative.

“Somewhere along the way, people lost the plot of Pilates and basically painted this picture as if it was for one demographic,” Johnson explained. “That’s not the case. I created this space to make it inclusive and accessible because it truly is for everyone.”

At GRND Pilates, the focus is on authenticity and inclusion. Johnson notes that while Atlanta has seen more diversity in Pilates spaces, there’s still work to be done nationwide. “If you step outside of Atlanta, the Pilates world still looks how it did when I first started my practice,” she said. “That’s why it’s so important to keep creating spaces where people see themselves.”

The Health Benefits That Keep People Coming Back

Johnson believes Pilates transforms not only the body but also the mind. She calls it a full-body practice that improves posture, balance, and strength—especially in the core, or what she calls “the powerhouse.”

“When you’re doing true Pilates and you’re consistent, the benefits overflow into your daily life,” she explained. “It’s great for your posture, spinal health, and pelvic floor. It’s low-impact but high-intensity. When you connect with your powerhouse, you move differently. You feel amazing.”

For Johnson, that feeling is what keeps clients returning—and what motivates her to expand GRND’s reach even further.

A Growing Community of Strength and Support

GRND Pilates has built a loyal following with more than 3,000 clients served. For many, the studio is more than a workout—it’s a safe haven.

“I’ve had clients go through some really difficult moments,” Johnson shared. “One woman lost her best friend. The next day, she came here and said, ‘I just need to move my body. This is such a safe haven for me.’ That’s always been the goal.”

Johnson wants everyone who walks into GRND to leave feeling lighter. “Life can be a lot,” she said. “When you come here, leave it at the door. This space is for you to pour love into yourself.”

Her mission continues to grow as she expands her community both in Atlanta and online through grndpilates.com, offering classes for both women and men.
