As Tony Junious won the mayorship of Summerton, South Carolina in 2022, he broke barriers by becoming the first Black person elected to the role. Tragically, Junious recently passed away at 48 years old after a vehicle crash.
Blazing a Historic Trail in His Hometown
A Summerton native, Junious made history when he was elected mayor of the small town in 2022. With just 800 residents, Summerton has a slim Black majority at 52%.
Upon his election, Junious said “I’m more excited that the citizens choose to elect me to serve as mayor, to help move the town forward.” He aimed to uplift his community which faced economic depression.
After the tragic news of his death on January 27, 2024, the town of Summerton called Junious a “beloved mayor” whose life was “dedicated to public service.” Locals are reeling from the loss.
Over 20 Years Dedicated to Education
Prior to the mayoralty, Junious served students and families through two decades on Clarendon County school boards. He worked to enhance educational quality and equity.
The school district remembered Junious for his “remarkable passion” and constant efforts to enrich opportunities and resources for students. His mentorship and advocacy bettered countless young lives.
Leaving a Legacy of Selfless Service
While Junious only held the mayoral office for a brief period before his untimely passing, his legacy of community leadership stretches back decades.
From volunteering at school events to providing scholarships, Junious gave back however he could. Summerton resident Isaac Pringle said “everybody loved him” for his beautiful, humble spirit.
The town and school district lost a trailblazer and selfless public servant. But Junious’ legacy of progress and commitment to his hometown will live on and inspire future generations of leaders.
