How Joetta Mial Guided Huron High with Vision and Relentless Energy as Ann Arbor’s First Black and First Female Principal

Leading Huron High with Determination and Care

Joetta Mial stood at the helm of Huron High School during a time of change. As Ann Arbor’s first Black and first female principal, she carried both titles with pride and purpose. Her leadership style was grounded in respect, accountability, and a deep belief in the potential of every student.

Mial wasn’t just a figurehead. She walked the halls, spoke with students, and connected with staff daily. Her energy was unmatched. She treated the school as a living, breathing community—one where every voice mattered.

A Teacher at Heart, Always

Whether in a classroom or at a community event, Mial never stopped teaching. She believed education extended far beyond school walls. Those who worked with her recall her commitment to guiding young people toward not just academic success, but also personal growth.

She credited her passion for education to her husband, Harry Mial, Ann Arbor Public Schools’ first full-time Black teacher. Inspired by his example, she returned to college while raising her family to build her own career in education.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Mial’s influence didn’t end when the school bell rang. She encouraged students to dream big, and she celebrated their achievements as if they were her own. Her leadership opened doors for countless students who might have felt overlooked.

Colleagues often described her as a “force in motion.” She rarely sat still, always searching for ways to improve the school and strengthen the community. Her tireless work left a lasting imprint on Ann Arbor’s educational landscape.

A Legacy That Lives On

Even in retirement, Mial’s spirit of service continued. Friends and family organized a drive-by celebration for her 90th birthday in May 2021, a fitting tribute to her decades of dedication. As cars passed her home, she waved with the same warmth she had shown in her years at Huron High.

Her story is a reminder that leadership is about more than titles. It’s about showing up, listening, and acting with integrity. Joetta Mial did all three—every single day.
