Dartmouth College is making history. It is naming a new building after one of its most famous graduates. Television titan Shonda Rhimes will be the first Black woman alum to receive this honor.
The college announced a new undergraduate residence hall. It will be called Shonda Rhimes Hall. This naming recognizes her recent $15 million pledge. More importantly, it shatters a long-standing barrier. Rhimes is the first woman and first Black graduate to have a Dartmouth building bear her name. The building is scheduled to open in 2028.
A Lasting Legacy on Campus
Rhimes shared her thoughts on this monumental moment. She stated, “Dartmouth wasn’t made in my image, but it is possible to remake it to include my image.” This powerful quote reflects her commitment to inclusion. She added that there is a “continual making and remaking of who Dartmouth is for and who belongs here.”
Her connection to the college runs deep. She graduated from Dartmouth in 1991. Since then, she has become an Emmy-winning producer and author. She is the creative force behind hit shows like Grey’s Anatomy. Furthermore, she currently serves on the college’s Board of Trustees. This gift is a testament to her ongoing support.
Building a Creative and Connected Community
The new hall is designed to be more than just a place to sleep. Rhimes is personally involved in the design process. She wants to ensure it supports student wellness and creativity. The plans include a wellness studio and soundproof creative rooms. There will even be a grand piano in a common area.
These features aim to help students find connection and balance. The five-story building will house 123 upper-level students. It will feature apartment-style suites with intentional gathering spaces. Ultimately, Rhimes Hall will provide a modern, supportive living environment.
Reinforcing the Value of Higher Education
Rhimes explained the motivation behind her generous gift. She said it is an opportunity to show how formative her college experience was. “It’s also really beautiful to be able to place some legacy on the building,” she noted. Her goal is to give back what was given to her.
She also addressed the broader value of college. “At a time when people are questioning the value of higher education, it feels important to put my money back into it,” Rhimes said. Her investment is a strong vote of confidence in Dartmouth’s mission. It highlights the lasting impact of a college education.

Dartmouth President Sian Leah Beilock praised the historic donation. She called the gift “pivotal for Dartmouth at this time.” She explained it will directly enhance the student experience. It also helps reimagine a key part of the campus.
President Beilock also celebrated Rhimes’s career. She praised her for creating inclusive worlds where anyone can be the protagonist. “We are honored that her name will grace this building,” Beilock said. She believes it will be a beacon of welcome for future generations of students. They will be inspired to write their own stories with a sense of possibility.
