Driskell Announces 2026 Senate Run in Tampa Bay Area
Florida House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell has announced her campaign for Florida Senate District 16, a seat covering parts of South St. Petersburg and Hillsborough County. The current senator, Darryl Rouson, is stepping down due to term limits.
Driskell, a Hillsborough County Democrat, says she’s ready to take her experience to the Senate. In a statement, she said, “Our state faces significant challenges, and I am ready to bring my dedication and experience to the State Senate to ensure all Floridians have the opportunity to thrive.”
Her Legislative Record and Key Issues
Driskell was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2018. Over the past seven years, she has pushed for affordable housing, property insurance relief, and better access to healthcare. She is currently term-limited from running for her House seat again in 2026.
Although there were early rumors she might run for governor, Driskell chose to focus on continuing her work through the state Senate. Her campaign message focuses on “protecting your freedom to be healthy, prosperous, and safe.”
The Power of Endorsements
Two major figures have already endorsed Driskell: former Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn and former state senator Arthenia Joyner, who held the same Senate seat until 2016. Joyner said, “She has the experience, vision, and work ethic necessary to be an outstanding State Senator.”
These endorsements add weight to Driskell’s candidacy, especially with nearly 70% of Democratic voters in the district living in Hillsborough County—where Driskell is based.
A Strong Opponent in the Primary
Driskell is not the only Democrat in the race. State Rep. Michele Rayner, who lives in Pinellas County, announced her candidacy in December 2024. Rayner was elected to the House in 2020 and once aimed for Congress before her district was redrawn.
With both candidates being well-known and respected Black women leaders, the primary is expected to draw strong interest from voters and community organizations alike.
A Historic First for Black Women in Florida Politics
Driskell is the first Black woman to lead the Florida House Democrats. She also made history as the first person in more than 30 years to be elected to that leadership role twice.
Her success has inspired many across the state. Now, her Senate campaign gives voters a chance to see her take that leadership to the next level.
A Legal Fight Could Affect the District
The shape of Senate District 16 is still being challenged in court. A lawsuit filed by the ACLU of Florida and others argues that the 2022 redistricting plan may have racially gerrymandered the district by linking Black communities across counties.
A panel of three federal judges is expected to rule on the case later this summer. The outcome could impact how the district looks when voters head to the polls.
