First Graduating Class Marks Milestone in Alabama Education
Dr. Shakea Miller has set a remarkable standard in Alabama’s education system. Her college, 1 on 1 Technical & Theological College, recently held its first graduation ceremony. A total of 154 students proudly received their degrees during the event on July 31, 2025.
This moment also marked the school’s first anniversary as a state-authorized degree-granting institution. Dr. Miller holds the distinction of being the first Black woman in Alabama to open and lead such a college. Nationwide, she is one of only six Black women to establish a degree-granting institution.
Leadership and Recognition for Dr. Shakea Miller
The ceremony followed a wave of recognition for Dr. Miller’s leadership. She was recently honored with the Publisher’s Award by The Courier Eco Latino newspaper. In addition, she was featured in The Eco Latino Magazine for her impact on underserved communities.
In her words, the achievement is about far more than personal success. “This isn’t just about me, this is about legacy,” Dr. Miller said. “We are rewriting the rules and restoring hope for students who once believed college wasn’t in their future.”
Students Graduate in High-Demand Career Fields
The inaugural class included students from career-focused programs. Graduates completed studies in areas such as Paralegal, Human Resource Management, Clinical Medical Assisting, Pharmacy Technician, Medical Billing & Coding, and Administrative Medical Assisting.
These programs address key workforce needs in Alabama and beyond. By offering such degrees, the college helps students secure opportunities in industries where skilled professionals are in high demand.
Celebration Filled with Generosity and Surprises
The graduation ceremony was not a typical academic event. Dr. Miller went above and beyond to make the day unforgettable. She refunded half of the Dean’s List students’ tuition as a special award. She also presented the Amy Arroyo Scholarship, which offered free tuition for future advancement.
In a bold gesture, Dr. Miller gifted graduates with a three-day, two-night trip to Las Vegas. “These students didn’t just pass exams; they overcame real-life challenges. They deserve to be celebrated loudly and unapologetically,” she said.
Expansion Plans with New High School Division
Looking ahead, the college is set to broaden its reach. Starting January 5, 2026, it will launch 1 on 1 Technical & Theological High School. The new division will serve adults and teens seeking an alternative education pathway.
This program will provide flexible, 100% online courses for those needing a second chance or a new beginning. Enrollment is already open, and interest is growing rapidly.
Building a Strong Future for Education in Alabama
With enrollment rising quickly, 1 on 1 Technical & Theological College expects to double its student population by the end of 2025. The college has become a hub for first-generation students, adult learners, and youth seeking better opportunities.
Based in Phenix City, Alabama, the institution provides associate degrees, professional certifications, and soon, high school diplomas. Dr. Miller’s vision continues to expand, shaping a new path for higher learning in the state.
