Dr. Dominique Merriweather Leads Sutton Middle as First Black Principal and Youngest Leader in Atlanta Schools

Sutton Middle welcomes first Black principal

Dr. Dominique Merriweather has taken a historic step at Sutton Middle School in Atlanta. At 30 years old, he is the first Black principal to lead the school and the youngest principal in the entire Atlanta Public School district. His leadership now guides more than 1,500 students.

His appointment is a milestone for Sutton, a school with a long history but no previous Black principal. For the district, it reflects a new era of youthful leadership and broader representation. Parents, teachers, and students are watching with pride as he takes on this major responsibility.

From Morehouse College to school leadership

Merriweather is a graduate of Morehouse College, one of the nation’s top historically Black colleges. He completed his degree there in 2014, only four years after graduating from Westlake High School. At first, he had no plans to enter education. His early ambition was to build a career as a corporate attorney.

However, his path shifted after he spent time mentoring students in Atlanta. “One day, I went to go read to elementary school kids in the Atlanta University Center area and I fell in love with the students,” he told Fox 5 Atlanta. That single moment inspired him to change direction and devote his life to education.

Career growth from teacher to principal

Merriweather began his career as a special education teacher in 2013. His dedication and results quickly stood out, leading him to rise through the ranks. In less than a decade, he advanced from teaching to leading one of the largest middle schools in the city.

Sutton Middle’s community sees his story as proof of what commitment and passion can achieve. His journey highlights the value of strong mentors and the importance of teachers who understand their students’ experiences.

A vision for Atlanta students

As principal, Merriweather’s focus is not only on academics but also on building a supportive environment for students. He wants to strengthen learning while also ensuring that every child feels valued. His unique perspective as both the youngest principal and the first Black principal at Sutton gives him a special connection with many of his students.

For Merriweather, this role is not just about personal achievement. It is about showing the next generation that leadership opportunities are possible at any age and for any background. His work now sets a new tone for Atlanta Public Schools and beyond.
