Charlotte Sibanyoni Rises From Orphanage to Lead as First Black Woman Reverend in Dutch Reformed Church

Charlotte Sibanyoni leads with purpose in Dutch Reformed Church

Charlotte Sibanyoni has achieved something powerful. She is the first Black woman to be ordained as a reverend in the Dutch Reformed Church (NG Kerk).

Her journey started from a children’s home and ended at the pulpit. Now, she’s not just leading a congregation—she’s also working toward a PhD in Hebrew in Norway. Her story was recently featured on Good Morning Angels: The Legacy, where she shared how the kindness of others helped shape her path.

From a tough beginning to a new home

Back in 2012, Charlotte was a high school senior. She lived in a children’s home and later in a small backroom because her mother couldn’t care for her. Life was hard, but her spirit stayed strong.

That year, a Dutch Reformed Church minister, Ds. Johan van Niekerk, and his wife, Rina, took her into their home. Their goal was to offer her a stable place to live while finishing school. Their kindness opened the door to everything that came next.

A helping hand changes everything

Charlotte’s friend, Nicole, saw her potential and reached out for help. She wrote to the Good Morning Angels team, asking for a bursary to support Charlotte’s university studies. The show connected her request to a University of Pretoria professor looking to sponsor a student. That professor chose Charlotte.

Charlotte didn’t take the chance for granted. She decided to study Theology—not just to earn a degree, but to give back. Her goal was clear: help others the way others had helped her.

A bold step toward ministry

Through hard work and faith, Charlotte completed her studies. In 2017, she reached a major milestone—becoming the first Black woman ordained in the NG Kerk. Her achievement was historic for the church and deeply personal for her.

She made it clear that this path wasn’t easy, but she never gave up. Every step she took was guided by a deep desire to serve others and live with purpose.

Now making waves in Norway

Today, Charlotte is working on her PhD in Hebrew in Norway. She’s on track to become the first Black woman to earn that degree in the field. Her story stands as proof that support, resilience, and opportunity can shape a powerful life.

On Good Morning Angels: The Legacy, she spoke with grace and gratitude. She hopes her story will inspire others to reach higher, even in the face of struggle.
