Young Honors a Legacy of Black Quarterbacks in the NFL
Quarterback Bryce Young is stepping into a proud legacy as one of the new faces of the NFL. The 24-year-old leader of the Carolina Panthers says he draws strength and purpose from those who paved the way, especially Michael Vick.
Vick became the first Black quarterback drafted No. 1 overall in 2001, the same year Young was born. More than two decades later, Young carries that history with deep respect.
“I’ve been able to meet Mike and talk to him,” Young shared. “He’s one of the pioneers. All of that matters to me.”
Faith and Football Guide Young Through Highs and Lows
Young’s journey in professional football has already shown its highs and challenges. After being the top pick in the 2023 draft, he was briefly benched during his rookie season. But he fought back and improved his play, leading his team with skill and grit.
This season, Young has thrown for 1,288 yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions through seven games. Before leaving the October 19 game with an ankle injury, he completed 15 of 25 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown.
He says faith has helped him remain steady. “I’m a big believer that everything happens for a reason,” he said. “God ordains all my steps. My faith has allowed me to be where I’m at.”
The Power of Representation in a Changing NFL
The 2025 season opened with a record number of Black starting quarterbacks in the league. For Young, this is not just a statistic — it is part of a long story of resilience and excellence.
“When I was younger, there were stereotypes about what we could and couldn’t do,” Young recalled. “I take a lot of pride in being part of this fraternity.”
His respect also extends to peers like Justin Fields of the New York Jets, who faced his own challenges that same weekend. Both young quarterbacks are navigating intense scrutiny while shaping the next chapter of NFL leadership.
A Veteran’s Belief in Young’s Future
Veteran quarterback Andy Dalton sees greatness in Young. “He was a No. 1 pick for a reason,” Dalton said. “He can see things before they happen. He’s made some unbelievable plays this year that not a lot of guys can make.”
Even critics who question Young’s size at 5-foot-10 haven’t shaken his confidence. Dalton calls it his “superpower,” noting that Young has always found ways to excel against bigger opponents.
Head coach Dave Canales added, “He’s been doing excellent throwing in rhythm and building confidence in our process.”
Building on a Trail Blazed by Michael Vick
Vick’s historic No. 1 draft selection changed the way many saw Black quarterbacks. His speed, creativity, and leadership opened doors for a new generation. Young stands on that foundation, knowing how much it matters to those who came before and those who will follow.
As he recovers from injury and looks to return, Young says the mission is bigger than the game. His faith, his respect for history, and his vision for the future are shaping what’s next.
