Angela Alsobrooks, Maryland’s First Black Senator, Champions Consumer Protections and Challenges Trump-Era Policies in Washington

Angela Alsobrooks Takes Bold Stand in the U.S. Senate

Maryland Senator Angela Alsobrooks is making her mark in Washington. Elected in 2024, she is the first Black senator from Maryland and has quickly emerged as a strong voice for consumer protections and accountability.

During her first year in office, Alsobrooks has spoken firmly against policies she believes harm research, health care, and national security. She has also focused on defending marginalized communities. “We see that Medicare and Medicaid are under attack,” Alsobrooks said. “There is so much under attack. It has been very sobering to see the issues that our country continues to grapple with.”

Her leadership has brought new energy to the Senate, where she continues to push back against what she calls reckless decisions that threaten the well-being of Americans.

Challenging Trump-Era Officials and Policies

Alsobrooks has been one of the strongest critics of the Trump administration’s influence. She directly questioned Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. during hearings, challenging his claims that African Americans have “stronger immune systems.” Later, she called for his resignation after cuts to cancer research and a rise in diseases like measles and tuberculosis.

She also demanded Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth step down after the release of classified information via text. Speaking to a crowd outside the National Institutes of Health in May, she asked, “Are you sick of it? The lies, the cruelty, the incompetence, the immorality, the lack of integrity. Are you sick of Donald Trump and RFK Jr.?”

Alsobrooks has also condemned the Trump administration’s move to take control of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., and its deployment of the National Guard. She said, “The city of Washington, D.C., belongs to the great people of Washington, D.C., not the occupant of the White House.”

Building Economic Opportunities for Maryland Families

Beyond challenging federal policies, Alsobrooks is focused on expanding opportunities for Marylanders. As the first woman to serve as Prince George’s County Executive from 2018 to 2024, she emphasized public safety and economic growth. Local leaders credit her with helping small towns strengthen policing and improve community safety.

Her top priority now is economic opportunities. “No matter where I have gone, people need, want and deserve to have the chance to provide for their families,” Alsobrooks explained. She wants Maryland families to enjoy affordable housing, job opportunities, and financial stability as part of what she calls “the American dream.”

Consumer Protections and Financial Reforms

Alsobrooks is also championing consumer protections in new financial markets. Her first bill, the Tariff Transparency Act, aimed to study the impact of tariffs on American families, though it did not advance. She has since shifted her attention to digital currencies and financial accountability.

Working with Senator Chris Van Hollen, Alsobrooks supported legislation banning elected officials from profiting through cryptocurrency endorsements or sponsorships. She then introduced the GENIUS Act, one of the first national laws to regulate stablecoins and provide protections for consumers and community banks. The act passed Congress in July.

Alsobrooks called the new law “a major step forward for Americans participating in the stablecoin marketplace.” She added, “Without this bill, the public will continue to engage with a rapidly growing industry with no guardrails and no regulatory framework. The GENIUS Act changes that.”

A New Era of Leadership from Maryland

As Maryland’s first Black senator, Alsobrooks is shaping a new kind of leadership rooted in accountability and opportunity. Her willingness to confront powerful figures while also focusing on everyday economic concerns has already made her one of the most visible new senators in Washington.

Her record shows a blend of bold advocacy and practical problem-solving. From challenging health care policies to strengthening financial protections, Alsobrooks is committed to ensuring Maryland families — and all Americans — have a fair chance at stability and growth.
