Meet Terrence Martin, the First Black American Federation of Teachers, Michigan President in History

Blazing a Trail for Inclusivity

Terrence Martin has his name in history, after becoming the first African American to serve as the president of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Michigan.

His groundbreaking election to a full, two-year term during the organization’s recent convention in Detroit marks a significant milestone in promoting diversity and inclusion within the state’s educational landscape.

“I am honored,” Martin expressed after securing the historic victory on May 4th.

A Voice for Educators

As the leader of AFT Michigan, which boasts 35,000 members comprising educators and healthcare providers across the state, Martin’s role is pivotal in advocating for their rights and empowerment.

His leadership comes at a crucial time when unions nationwide are experiencing a surge in membership, and diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the forefront of the conversation.

“His leadership is important as many states across the nation disregard diversity, equity and inclusion,” said Lakia Wilson-Lumpkins, Detroit Federation of Teachers president and an AFT Michigan executive board member.

A Seasoned Educator

Martin’s journey in education began as a second-grade teacher at John Lynch Elementary, where he assumed the role of a building representative for the Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT). He later served as the DFT’s president from 2018 to 2023 before being elected as AFT Michigan’s secretary-treasurer in 2022.

Under Martin’s tenure, AFT Michigan has played a significant role in union authorization votes at Western Michigan University, the University of Michigan-Flint, and the University of Michigan Health Systems. This expansion of union representation aligns with Martin’s vision of ensuring educators’ voices are heard and respected.

“We’re thrilled to welcome the tenure-track faculty at U-M-Flint to the union,” Martin said, emphasizing the importance of unions in strengthening the state’s education system.

Advocating for Educational Excellence

Martin’s leadership has already garnered praise, particularly after Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation aimed at recruiting and retaining skilled educators and counselors. He commended the development, acknowledging the positive impact of empowered educators on student success.

“We know that when educators are empowered and their voices are heard and respected, our schools are better for it, and we’re glad Gov. Whitmer is paving the way to restore educators’ rights and set students up for success,” Martin stated.

A Lifetime of Mentorship

Martin’s remarkable career path is a testament to the power of mentorship and support. He credits former DFT Presidents Janna Garrison, Keith Johnson, and Virginia Cantrell, as well as office team members Judy Smith, Karin Whittler, Tim Michalak, and Lois Lofton-Doniver, for their guidance.

Additionally, he acknowledges the profound impact of his grandparents, Lenola and William Martin, on his life’s journey.

With Terrence Martin at the helm, AFT Michigan ushers in a new era of leadership, one that celebrates diversity, amplifies educators’ voices, and paves the way for a more inclusive and equitable educational landscape in the state.
