36-year-old entrepreneur Kia Patterson recently celebrated a historic business achievement – taking over ownership of a Grocery Outlet in Compton to establish the first ever Black-owned grocery store in the city.
Bringing Healthy, Affordable Options
As a Compton native, Patterson saw firsthand the limited access to fresh, affordable food facing many living in the predominately Black and lower-income area.
She took ownership of the discount grocery store in April 2017, determined to provide quality organic produce and household essentials at reduced prices.
Investing In Her Community
Patterson staffed Grocery Outlet with family and locals needing employment. She supports Compton through fundraising for schools and helping college students access low-cost food.
Patterson wants to make positive impact beyond just commerce.
Drawing On Major Market Experience
Before becoming owner, Patterson spent 17 years working for grocery chain Smart & Final.
She gained extensive operational expertise from that corporate role later recruited by Grocery Outlet to help grow their brand in Los Angeles, which informed her business plan for the store.
Committing to Keep Doors Open
Despite early success, Patterson emphasizes the need for continued community backing to keep her Grocery Outlet running.
As an independently-owned franchise, maintaining strong local sales remains vital to ensure Compton residents can keep accessing reliable food source and jobs.
