Jonathon Heyward Makes History As Youngest And First Black Music Conductor For Baltimore Symphony Orchestra

Jonathon Heyward is a 31-year-old conductor who recently became the first Black musical director and youngest conductor ever appointed by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in its 107 year history.

Heyward developed a passion for classical music and conducting from a young age. He started as a cellist before trying his hand at leading his middle school orchestra. Over time he has earned attention for his creative vision and for conducting concerts wearing his signature red Converse sneakers.

In September 2022, Heyward officially began his tenure at the BSO with a series of concerts featuring performances by local youth orchestras and dance troupes.

As a conductor focused on community outreach, he aims to make orchestral music more accessible, particularly for underserved Black youth in Baltimore.

Heyward’s historic appointment is both an example of Black excellence in classical music and a chance to increase diversity in the field. They emphasize his youth and open creative spirit while underscoring his proven conducting skills on the international stage.

With a musical legacy still in its early chapters, he is an exciting new face poised to evolve orchestras through fresh perspectives.
