Michelin’s Recognition and Accolades
In addition to receiving the prestigious Michelin star, Mitchell was honored with the 2022 New York Young Chef Award by the esteemed Michelin Guide.
His accomplishments have garnered well-deserved attention, as he is just the second Black executive chef in the country to receive a Michelin star.
“I wanted to always, you know, plant my feet here and be a serious New York City chef. So that was always a goal of mine,” Mitchell shared.
Humble Beginnings and Culinary Inspiration
Mitchell’s journey to culinary greatness began in Detroit, Michigan, where he was born and raised. His passion for cooking was ignited by his grandmother, who instilled in him a love for wholesome, flavorful dishes like whole fried bass.
“I think the thing that stuck with me the most is she used to do this whole fry fish, like whole fry bass all the time when I was younger,” Mitchell reminisced.
Despite attending culinary school briefly, Mitchell’s true education came from on-the-job training and a relentless pursuit of excellence. He sought out prestigious restaurants like Eleven Madison Park, honing his skills and gaining invaluable experience in the world of fine dining.
Clover Hill: A Culinary Masterpiece
When Clover Hill opened its doors a year ago, Mitchell became the executive chef and mastermind behind the restaurant’s acclaimed eight-course tasting menu. His team meticulously crafts each dish, continuously refining and tweaking it until culinary perfection is achieved.
“I guess it’s challenging, but we’re always changing something or we’re always trying to make the dish the best version of itself, right?” Mitchell explained.
Breaking Barriers and Inspiring Change
Mitchell’s historic achievement as the first Black Michelin-starred chef in New York City holds profound significance. It not only celebrates his individual success but also serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for aspiring chefs from diverse backgrounds.
