From Jamaica to Celtic Park: A Pioneering Path
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1922, Heron’s footballing talents first caught the attention of the Canadian air force during World War II.
After the war, he embarked on a professional career, playing for Detroit Wolverines and Detroit Corinthians in the United States.
However, it was Celtic’s scouting during their 1951 American tour that would change the course of Heron’s life.
The “Black Arrow” Arrives at Celtic Park
Impressed by his prowess, Celtic invited Heron for pre-season trials in Glasgow. He made an immediate impact, scoring twice in a public trial at Celtic Park and earning the moniker “the Black Arrow.”
Heron made his debut on August 18, 1951, in a League Cup tie against Morton, scoring in a 2-0 victory. However, his time at Celtic Park was brief, as he competed for the center-forward role with John McPhail, a club legend of the era.
A Legacy Beyond the Pitch: Fathering a Musical Icon
While Heron’s football career was relatively short-lived, his impact extended far beyond the pitch. He was the father of the legendary Gil Scott-Heron, a seminal figure in the jazz and rap music scenes of the 1970s and 80s.
Scott-Heron, known for his poetic and socially conscious lyrics, often reflected on his father’s dual contributions to music and football, stating, “…the two things the Scots loved most were music and football, and…my family had provided one representative of each.”

Despite his brief stint at Celtic, Heron’s impact was profound. His stylish on-field presence and charismatic personality left an indelible mark on Scottish football fans.
Even after his playing days, Heron’s legacy lived on, with his son’s concerts drawing fans donning Celtic tops in tribute to Heron’s pioneering role.
