Zeita Merchant Makes History

Zeita Merchant Makes History As First Black Woman Admiral In U.S. Coast Guard

In a historic milestone, Zeita Merchant is set to etch her name in the annals of the United States Coast Guard’s 233-year history.

This April, Merchant will assume the rank of Rear Admiral, becoming the first Black woman to achieve this prestigious position within the esteemed maritime organization.

Commanding One of the Nation’s Busiest Ports

“In April, Merchant will command one of the nation’s busiest and most economically vital port complexes as an admiral for the U.S. Coast Guard,” according to reports.

As Rear Admiral, Merchant will take the helm of the Port of New York, overseeing all Coast Guard missions at one of the nation’s most economically vital port complexes. Her appointment is a testament to her exceptional leadership abilities and expertise in maritime safety, security, and crisis management.

A Beacon of Excellence and Perseverance

Merchant’s journey to this historic achievement is one of perseverance and a passion for service. Born in Chicago and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, her initial aspirations were to become a doctor.

However, financial constraints led her to explore alternative paths, ultimately finding her calling in the Coast Guard’s College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative scholarship program.

“I always had this passion for service, but I never thought it would be in the form of military service,” Merchant said. “I really feel like this is God’s plan and not my plan.”

Despite the unexpected turn, Merchant’s dedication and commitment to excellence propelled her through a remarkable 27-year career, culminating in this historic achievement.

A Trailblazer Inspiring Future Generations

Merchant’s ascension to the rank of Rear Admiral is not only a personal triumph but also a beacon of hope for aspiring women and minorities in the armed forces. She credits her mentor, Olivia Hooker, the first Black woman to enter the Coast Guard, as a source of inspiration and a living testament to the power of breaking barriers.

“Hooker joined the military because she was fighting for women’s rights to join the military service,” Merchant said. “Specifically minorities, she joined to prove a point, not only that we can do it, but we can do it well. I’m just a living testimony to her legacy.”

With a wealth of academic and professional accolades, including a doctorate in business administration and numerous military honors, Zeita Merchant has proven that excellence knows no boundaries.
