At just 13 years old, Alena Analeigh Wicker shattered records as the youngest Black student ever accepted into medical school. Hailing from outside Fort Worth, Texas, her journey is nothing short of exceptional, marked by early achievements and a passion for making a positive impact.
Academic Prodigy
Alena’s academic prowess surfaced early; reading chapter books at the age of 3, she delved into high school courses by 11. Remarkably, she enrolled in two colleges at 12, pursuing two separate undergraduate degrees in biological sciences concurrently at Arizona State University and Alabama’s Oakwood University.
A Trailblazer in the Making
Encouraged by family, educators, and advisers, Alena applied for early acceptance to the University of Alabama’s Heersink School of Medicine for 2024. Against steep odds, she received acceptance, making her over a decade younger than the average incoming medical student.
In an Instagram post, Alena shared her achievement, reflecting on the statistics that seemed to defy her journey:
“A little black girl adopted from Fontana, California. I’ve worked so hard to reach my goals and live my dreams.”
Early Ventures into STEM
Alena’s interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) led her to become NASA’s youngest intern in the summer of 2021, working on remote research for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Her mentor, Clayton Turner, highlighted Alena’s dedication to helping others, a recurring theme in her journey.
A Vision for the Future
Alena aspires to become a doctor by the age of 18, focusing on viral immunology and advocating for underrepresented communities lacking healthcare. Her passion for learning, epitomized by a hunger for knowledge, fuels her desire to create a positive impact on the world.

Despite her extraordinary achievements, Alena remains grounded. She enjoys typical teenage activities like going to the movies, playing soccer, baking, and spending time with friends. Alena’s mother, Daphne McQuarter, emphasizes the importance of balance, nurturing her daughter’s gift while allowing her to experience the joys of childhood.
Brown STEM Girl: Inspiring the Next Generation
Beyond her academic pursuits, Alena founded the Brown STEM Girl organization, aimed at inspiring and providing scholarships to young girls of color interested in STEM fields. Her mission is to create a path for girls who look like her, breaking down barriers and encouraging them to pursue their dreams.
