A Groundbreaking Career in Comedy
Garrett Morris, the legendary actor and comedian, has etched his name in the annals of television history as the first Black cast member on the iconic sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live” (SNL). His remarkable journey spans over five decades, cementing his status as a true trailblazer in the entertainment industry.
“Congratulations to the LEGEND @_garrettmorris on receiving a Star on the #HollywoodWalkofFame. Some of you may know him as Uncle Junior on Jamie Foxx or Stan on Martin, or as the FIRST black cast member on Saturday Night Live and so many classic films and shows. His career spans over 50 years.”
Breaking Barriers on ‘Saturday Night Live’
Morris’s path to SNL was unconventional. Initially brought on as a writer, his talents as an actor were recognized by fellow cast members Gilda Radner and Laraine Newman, who advocated for him to audition. It was during his audition alongside Radner that Morris showcased his impeccable improvisational skills, leading to his historic hiring as the first Black cast member in 1975.
“Gilda Radner and Laraine Newman, they told Lorne Michaels, ‘Hey you’ve got Garrett bringing in these actors, but he’s an actor himself,’” recalled Morris. “So he called me and offered me the job.”
Overcoming Challenges and Paving the Way
Morris’s journey on SNL was not without its challenges. As the only Black cast member during the show’s early years, he faced difficulties in securing substantial screen time and navigating the racial dynamics of the era. However, his perseverance and talent shone through, cementing his legacy with memorable characters like the pastor organizing a “White Guilt Relief Fund” and his iconic “News for the Hard of Hearing” segment on “Weekend Update.”
“The racial problem in America was a part of Saturday Night Live, too. Integrating me as a black man in the thing was something that happened very gradually.”
A Multifaceted Career in Film and Television
Beyond his groundbreaking work on SNL, Morris’s career has spanned numerous iconic films and television shows. From his role as Uncle Junior on the hit sitcom “The Jamie Foxx Show” to his portrayal of Stan on “Martin,” Morris has consistently delivered outstanding performances that have captivated audiences worldwide.
“His career spans over 50 years. We love you @_garrettmorris and we honor you.”
A Well-Deserved Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
In recognition of his remarkable contributions to the entertainment industry, Morris was honored with a star on the prestigious Hollywood Walk of Fame on his 87th birthday, nearly 50 years after his debut on SNL. This honor was a testament to his lasting impact and the doors he has opened for generations of Black entertainers.
“I got this news at 86 years old!” Morris told People. “But still, whenever it comes [it] is all right. I’m grateful.”
