History was made at BMI Nashville recently, as a group of Black female rappers were brought on as the first Black women to ever host the iconic venue. The entertainers shared their excitement and gratitude over the groundbreaking opportunity.
Nashville Institution Opens Its Doors
Broadcast Music, Inc (BMI) has promoted artists’ music in Nashville for over 8 decades. The likes of Willie Nelson, Taylor Swift, and Dolly Parton have graced its stages over the years.
However, before now, BMI Nashville had never welcomed Black female MCs to host and perform in the coveted space. Thanks to the efforts of promoter Shannon Sanders, that changed with rappers Meme, Blasian B, Sweetpoison, and Chell Foxx.
Breaking Barriers as First Black Female Hosts
On Sanders’ invitation, the hip hop artists and radio hosts took over BMI Nashville for the “Strickly4theLadies” concert series. They made history as the first Black women to ever host events at the institution.
The emotional entertainers expressed gratitude at the opportunity. “We are so happy to have you on board | it’s rocket time,” said Averianna Patton, who manages promotion.
Meme the Goat, one of the MCs, simply called the experience “Them ones” with crying emojis, highlighting how monumental this first was. Other comments echoed her sentiment.
What This Milestone Represents
The rappers celebrated breaking barriers and opening doors for other Black female artists. They set a new precedent on one of Nashville’s most esteemed stages.
“Keep knocking down doors. This is what we need to see more of!” wrote commenter iamtaranae. Indeed, this step forward for inclusivity in Music City sparked joy, motivation, and possibilities for the future.
Through passion and persistence, these entertainers achieved a historic first. Now Black female voices will resonate from the heights of BMI Nashville for years to come.
