How Brittney Johnson Made History As The First Black Woman To Play The Role Of Glinda In Any Capacity

Brittney Johnson Makes History as First Black Glinda in Wicked

NEW YORK, NY – 5 years ago, actress Brittney Johnson stepped into the sparkling bubble as Glinda in the hit Broadway musical Wicked, making history as the first Black woman to portray the beloved Good Witch.

Johnson’s journey with Wicked began in June 2018 when she joined the Broadway company as an ensemble member and Glinda understudy. Just 6 months later, she went on as Glinda for the first time.

Breaking Barriers as Glinda Standby

After regularly performing the role as understudy, Johnson was promoted to the position of Glinda standby in July 2019. She continued to cement her status as a fan favorite, going on frequently as Glinda until the Covid shutdown in March 2020.

When Wicked reopened on Broadway in September 2021, Johnson returned as part of the cast. She was featured performing songs from the show on NBC’s Today show as part of the ongoing celebrations.

Taking Over Role Full-Time

On February 14, 2022, Johnson made history again when she took over the coveted role of Glinda full-time. After a successful year in the principal role, she played her final Glinda performance on February 12, 2023.

“The impact that I’ve been able to make has certainly kept me there,” Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter about her journey with the show.

In an industry still lacking in opportunities for Black women, Johnson is proud to inspire the next generation of performers. Her persistence and vocal talent have cemented her place as a Wicked icon.
