Sheffield has proudly named Safiya Saeed as its new Lord Mayor. This marks a special moment for the city, as she is the first Black woman wearing a hijab to hold the ceremonial role.
Saeed officially stepped into the position during a council meeting at Sheffield Town Hall on Monday. Her family traveled from Somaliland to witness the proud occasion.
“I am honoured to be the first Black woman wearing a hijab to take this role,” Saeed shared during her speech. “I came to Sheffield in 1985, and this city has truly become my home, a place where I have always felt I belong.”
Sheffield Celebrates a Historic New Lord Mayor
The 128th person to hold the title, Safiya Saeed stands out not only for her background but for her dedication to the city. As a single mother of five and community leader, she’s built a strong connection with the people of Sheffield.
Although the Lord Mayor role carries no political power, it holds deep ceremonial importance. The position serves as an ambassador for the city, representing Sheffield at events and celebrations.
During the inauguration, emotions ran high as supporters and family members cheered for this proud milestone. Saeed’s appointment reflects the city’s growing diversity and commitment to inclusion.
A Champion for Community Voices in Sheffield
Beyond politics, Safiya Saeed is known for her heart for young people. She founded Reach Up Youth, a local group supporting youth from Black and ethnic minority backgrounds. The project encourages confidence, leadership, and positive change within the community.
Her message to the council and residents was clear: “Every voice, no matter how quiet, should feel heard in the heart of this city.” Saeed wants every child and family in Sheffield to know they belong.
For her work, she was named Inspirational Individual at the Yorkshire Choice Awards in 2022. It was a well-earned moment for a woman who has devoted years to lifting others.
New Faces in Sheffield Council Leadership
While Safiya Saeed’s appointment made headlines, other council changes also took place. Labour’s Tom Hunt was re-elected as council leader after securing the most councillor seats.
The Liberal Democrats welcomed Martin Smith as their new leader, replacing Shaffaq Mohammed. Mohammed recently received a life peerage in the House of Lords and will remain as a councillor for Ecclesall.
Meanwhile, the Green Party also saw a change, with Angela Argenzio stepping in as their new leader. She takes over from Douglas Johnson, who led the party for six years.
