History was made when First Lt. Gabrielle A. White, a 25-year-old Black woman, became the first female to complete the U.S. Army’s Best Ranger Competition. The grueling three-day event tested strength, endurance, and tactical skills.
White and her teammate, Capt. Seth Deltenre, finished in 14th place out of 52 elite teams. She was the only woman competing in the prestigious challenge held at Fort Benning, Georgia.
Breaking Barriers in Military History
The Best Ranger Competition is one of the toughest tests in the U.S. Armed Forces. Since 1984, only male soldiers had completed it—until now. White’s success shatters stereotypes and inspires future generations.
“Yay! Congratulations 1st Lt. Gabrielle White!” tweeted actress Rosie Perez. Social media erupted with praise as White proved that skill, not gender, defines a soldier’s ability.
What Makes the Best Ranger Competition So Tough?
The event pushes soldiers to their limits with brutal challenges. These include combat water survival, a bayonet obstacle course, and ballistic breaching. Teams also face helocasting (helicopter water jumps) and rope bridge crossings.
Originally created to honor Lieutenant General David E. Grange Jr., the competition finds the best two-person team in the military. Now, thanks to White, the term “two-man team” may need an update.
Who Is Gabrielle A. White?
A West Point graduate (2021), White earned her Ranger Tab in 2022. She serves as an infantry officer (11A) and is currently training at the Maneuver Captains Career Course.
Her awards include two Army Commendation Medals, a National Defense Service Medal, and an Air Assault Badge. White’s discipline and resilience prove why she made history.
Why This Victory Matters for Women in the Military
White’s achievement is a milestone for diversity in the armed forces. It shows that women can excel in elite combat roles traditionally dominated by men.
Army spokesman Christopher Surridge praised her as a role model. With more women joining special operations, White’s success paves the way for future trailblazers.
