Blessed Stephen Curates Powerful BSU Exhibit as Fairfield’s First Black Art History Major to Lead a University Library Showcase

Leading With Vision and Purpose

Blessed Stephen ’25 has made a major mark at Fairfield University. She is the first Black art history major to curate a library exhibit at the school. As president of the Black Student Union (BSU), she brought her vision to life in the DiMenna-Nyselius Library this February.

The exhibit, called Mosaic of Empowerment: A Tribute to Fairfield University’s Black Student Union, shares the story of Black student life on campus. With the help of library staff, Stephen created a moving and educational display for students, faculty, and visitors.

Celebrating Black Voices Through Art and History

The exhibit features photos, artifacts, and powerful commentary. Each piece tells a story about Black experiences at Fairfield. Though the BSU was only founded in 2016, Stephen knew there was more history to tell.

One standout event highlighted was the 1969 takeover of Xavier Hall. Black students protested to demand equality. Stephen also honored Professor Walter Petry, the university’s first Black faculty member, hired in 1957.

A Collaboration Fueled by Passion and Research

Stephen worked closely with Jennifer Mottolese and Lisa Thornell from the library. Together, they dug into university archives to bring the exhibit to life. Stephen said,

“I approached the library because it had archival materials on student clubs and hosted exhibitions similar to what I envisioned.”

As their ideas grew, so did the exhibit’s reach. Themes of student activism, faculty support, and cultural identity were all included.

Preserving History for Future Generations

The exhibit is more than just a visual experience. It now holds a place in Fairfield University’s permanent archives. Mottolese shared,

“It was not just a way of sharing the club’s history but preserving it.”

By documenting these moments, the exhibit ensures that the efforts of past and current students won’t be forgotten.

Bringing the Community Together

A special panel discussion was held on February 6, 2025. It featured past and current BSU members. Stephen organized both the in-person and livestreamed event. It allowed the community to reflect on shared experiences and discuss the future.

Stephen’s leadership brought students together to learn, connect, and feel inspired. Her work proves how storytelling through art can unite a campus.
