Christina Jerry Reels in Black Marlin After Two-Hour Battle
Cheers erupted at Tropicana Wharf as Christina Jerry brought in the first black marlin of the 48th NGF PNG National Games Fishing Titles. Representing the Lae-based all-women team “One More Vodka,” Jerry fought the marlin for two and a half hours before landing the 113.95kg catch.
The fish was caught at location M13 using a 24-kilo monofilament line. On board the boat Sundance, skippered by Silas Yawe, Jerry showed strength and focus throughout the challenge.
First Black Marlin Catch Marks Personal Achievement
Although Christina Jerry has caught marlin before, this black marlin is her first ever. It’s a personal win that also boosts her team’s morale. Jerry shared the unique difficulty in catching the species, saying,
“It is a bit harder to catch a black marlin; it does not come up. It stays in the deep, so it is a bit harder to catch one.”
This catch highlights her growth as an angler and adds a special moment to her journey with the National Games Fishing titles.
One More Vodka: A Strong Force in Women’s Fishing
The “One More Vodka” team from Lae is made up of three passionate female anglers. Over the years, they’ve gained a solid reputation in billfish events across Papua New Guinea. Their latest catch shows they’re still at the top of their game.
In 2024, the team finished second in the Dunlop Billfish Shootout. Their current participation in the Kokopo edition, which features 17 boats and crews, shows their ongoing commitment to the sport.
Setting the Tone for the Rest of the Competition
Jerry’s successful catch brings fresh energy to this year’s Billfish Shootout. It’s not just a personal victory but a powerful moment for women in sports fishing.
This achievement may inspire more women to step into deep-sea fishing. As the competition continues, all eyes will be on the Lae ladies and their next big catch.
