A New Era Begins at Hartford International University
Sherry Turner has been appointed as the 12th president of Hartford International University for Religion and Peace. Starting July 1, she will also make history as the first Black president of the Connecticut-based graduate school.
The university, formerly known as Hartford Seminary, focuses on interfaith education and peacebuilding. It serves around 100 students, with nearly a quarter identifying as Black. Dr. Turner will also serve as a professor of psychology and practice at the institution.
Leadership with Deep Roots in Education and Ministry
Dr. Turner brings decades of experience to her new role. She is an ordained Baptist minister and seasoned educator with a strong focus on diversity and interfaith collaboration. Before joining HIU, she worked at Rhodes College in Memphis as vice president of strategic initiatives.
Throughout her career, she has helped shape institutions that support Black students and communities. These include Spelman College, the United Negro College Fund, and the Atlanta University Center Consortium. She also spent over ten years teaching at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts.
A Vision Grounded in Peace and Collaboration
As she prepares to lead HIU, Dr. Turner is focused on unity, growth, and peace. “I treasure this opportunity to provide leadership to solidify HIU’s position as the nation’s leading resource for inter-religious education, research, and peace studies,” she said.
She added, “I look forward to collaborating with our trustees, administrators, faculty, staff, and students to create a shared vision and roadmap for doing so.” Her inclusive approach aligns well with the university’s mission of building understanding across faiths and cultures.
A Strong Academic and Spiritual Foundation
Dr. Turner holds several degrees that reflect her deep commitment to learning and service. She earned her bachelor’s in psychology, anthropology, and sociology from Rhodes College. She then pursued two master’s degrees—one in theological studies from Emory University and another in developmental psychology from North Carolina State University.
She later earned a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her combined training in theology, education, and psychology gives her a unique perspective in guiding students toward both academic success and personal growth.
A Meaningful Step Forward for Representation
Dr. Turner’s appointment sends a strong message about the power of representation in academic leadership. As the first Black president of HIU, she stands as a role model for young scholars, especially those from underrepresented communities.
Her leadership arrives at a time when higher education continues to evolve and adapt. With her background in strategic initiatives and a passion for inclusive education, Dr. Turner is well-positioned to help Hartford International University thrive in its next chapter.
